Egypt has traditionally been a leading source of Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton, renowned for its exceptional quality and competitive pricing. Today, it remains the second-largest exporter of ELS cotton to global markets. For decades, Gill & Company has been actively involved in the Egyptian cotton trade as both a merchant and agent. Egyptian cotton is handpicked and roller-ginned, ensuring the preservation of its superior fiber characteristics. Egypt produces a wide range of cotton qualities and staple lengths, from 1-5/32” to 1-1/2”, with Giza 94 and Giza 86 being the most prominent varieties.
The United States is the largest exporter of Extra-Long Staple (ELS) cotton, with Pima Cotton grown exclusively in the driest regions of the Southwestern U.S., including Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Since its introduction in California in 1989, the cotton growers of the San Joaquin Valley have established themselves as some of the most efficient and productive producers of high-quality ELS cotton in the world. By 1996, California became the leading producer of Pima cotton in the U.S. and now accounts for over 90% of the country’s production. For decades, Gill & Company has been actively involved as both a merchant and agent, supplying this premium cotton to India’s leading textile mills.
